[ back to top ] EVERYONE LOVES ESSENTIAL OILS. WHY DOESN'T SOFTRESS USE THEM? At Softress, we studied essential oils for years before deciding not to use them in our everyday skin care products. Not because they're not effective, but because they are. Essential oils are really drugs--plant-based medicine--and we feel they should be used with the same caution and respect we'd give to any other drug. Essential oils are assumed to be safe because they're natural. But they comprise many different chemicals, not all of them benign. Some of the most commonly used essential oils are photosensitizers, making skin more sensitive to sunlight and more prone to sunburn. Some affect the hormonal system, while others affect the liver. The same oils prized for therapeutic skin benefits may provoke allergic reactions if used too often or for too long. There are no studies on the safety of long-term, daily essential oil use. (Preservatives were considered absolutely safe, too, until decades of use proved otherwise.) Children are at special risk for any effects of long-term essential oil exposure. Their thin skin absorbs a higher amount of any substance applied to it, and their developing hormonal systems are more easily affected by chemicals in the blood. Yet nearly every natural body care product for children is formulated with essential oils. At Softress, we feel that until we know more about long-term safety, it's wise to treat essential oils with the same respect we treat other drugs. We think our essential-oil free, preservative-free body oils are the safest moisturizers for your skin and especially for your children's skin. [ back to top ] ARE SOFTRESS BODY OILS ORGANIC? Softress uses natural, expeller pressed, non-GMO oils in our body oil blends. Natural oils are very expensive, and as a small company we buy in small quantities, so we don' t have the kind of "economies of scale" that bigger companies enjoy. Organic oils can cost twice as much as their natural counterparts, which would make our products so expensive most people couldn't afford them. Our natural body oil blends are very skin-healthy, containing far fewer chemicals than 99% of the skin care products on the market.
